How to Measure a Horse
Math skills used on a ranch include measuring a horse using “hands.”
Students view still pictures of Cowboy Chad measuring his horse Pepper. The measuring process is repeated using a small replica of a horse in the museum ranching gallery. With instructions sent to the teacher before the conference presentation, students are encouraged to practice measuring skills in their classrooms by finding imaginary horses, using file cabinets, window sills, etc., to measure.
Additional math skills, such as finding areas and perimeters of stalls and stantions, are included as time permits.
Appropriate for students in Grades 3-5.

Training Horses Using their Inherited Traits
Horses are animals of prey. Horse trainers keep this in mind as they teach horses to work on the ranch or show in the arena. This conference uses horse training to discuss examples of comparing inherited traits with learned characteristics.
A horse trainer explains procedures used in training horses, visits with students and answers their questions. Upon registering for the conference, lesson plans appropriate to the topic are sent to the teacher. Included are activities for students to complete at the conclusion of the conference presentation.
Appropriate for students in Grades 4-7.

He will be dressed and equipped as a Special Texas Ranger from the Cattle Raiser's Association of the late 19th century. The aura he creates by his attire and manner helps put the students in a mood to learn about this oldest job of the working cow hand.
